Open Source and free softwares for design and painting

I have no ideas to drawing, and currently I have no commissions to do. That means a long time without updates here, and that will be worse next month, since it's "final tests season" *sigh*. That doesn't necessarily means I'm not trying to update my sites :P

I'm in Open Source projects, and free good stuff. Since proprietary softwares such as Adobe Photoshop (that I still love ♥) cost your kidney and part of liver, it's always good to have options, just in case of your shareware stop to work. The solutions that I've found out so far (most of them are free software solutions for designers and painters):

- Gimp, Gimp for Painters and Gimp Paint Studio. I have mentioned them already, also the last one demo gallery. So far the best option of PS, though some things still not that good, what makes lot of people give up. One of these problems are the menu/shortcut arrangement and CMYK profiles (printer color scheme), but there is some plugins to help about this :P

- GimpShop - this is a modification of traditional Gimp, that intend to make it more similar to PS enviroment and let the Photoshop users more comfortable with Gimp menu arrangements.

- PSPI: running Photoshop plugins in Gimp - this Gimp plugin allow you to use a good amount of native Photoshop plugins;

- CMYKtool - convert RGB to CMYK and many other ICC profilers.

- Separate+ - convert RGB to CMYKand many others color profiles. You can download from SourceForge project page or the experimental version from CMYKtool creators also.

- Converter RGB para CMYK / Convert RGB to CMYK - the command lines to convert color profiles in Linux (in portuguese).

- Krita - digital painting and editing - just like Gimp, but it has CMYK management and some natural media emulation tools, tough still not that mature software, but could be a good convertion tool :P

- IrfanView - a powerful free image viewer and converter that have plugins to expand support to other medias such mp3, DJVU format, burn slide shows in CD's, etc.

- Tux Paint - Plain and simple editing stuff, a image painting/editing software for kids. You can download from SourceForge project page also;

- Inkscape - perfect for vectorial stuff, SVG format support, a good substitute for Corel Draw and Illustrator. You can download it from SourceForge project page also.

- XaraXtreme - vectorial graphic illustration tool from Corel, now shifted to GPL Opensource. Yay!

- SK1 - vectorial illustration and a powerful image converter that can substitute professional proprietary software like Corel Draw or Illustrator.

- Cinepaint - a Gimp-derivated program to edit movies in deep painting image retouching in 8bit, 16bit or 32bit for Linux, MAC and BSD. Some studios such as Sony and Disny had used this tool. You can also check out the SourceForge project page.

- Blender - 3D modelling stuff :D it's a nice substitute for Zbrush and 3DS. You can checkout the featured gallery with some rendering samples.

- Sculptris - 3D modelling. Small and very effective!

- Scribus - a powerful and professional page layout, a good substitute for PageMaker and Indesign. You can checkout the SourceForge project page also.

- Open Office - is a good substitute for MSOffice suite. I think that says all! (baixe a versão brasileira BROffice).

* Illustrator, PageMaker, Indesign and Photoshop ©Adobe; Corel Draw and XaraX ©Corel; Office Suite ©Microsoft.

That's all for now :P
